The calendar has come to us from Ancient Egypt and we still use it to this day. It is a calendar based on Sothis (the star Sirius). The Egyptian pharaohs had to swear never to change the calendar!

The rules of the Jalaali calendar are quite simple. Years of 12 months are reckoned from the era of the Hijra, commemorating the migration of the Prophet and his followers from Mecca to Medina in AD 622
